About Exposure Monitoring & Assessments Surveys

Protecting Workers Through Science, Data, and Compliance

The SRP Environmental Industrial Hygiene Division is led by a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) with over 25 years of experience. Our team helps employers evaluate and control exposure risks in compliance with OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1000 and other regulatory requirements.

We determine if exposure monitoring is needed, identify the appropriate sampling strategy, and utilize AIHA-accredited analytical laboratories to ensure accuracy and defensible results.

Comprehensive Exposure Assessment

Every employer should regularly evaluate employee exposure to chemical and physical hazards as part of their Hazard Communication Program. SRP’s Industrial Hygiene team provides complete Exposure Identification and Risk Assessment Evaluations that include:

  • Review of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventory

  • Facility walkthroughs to identify risks and exposure sources

  • Exposure monitoring using OSHA/NIOSH sampling methods

  • Development of Exposure Control Plans and Corrective Action Programs

With over two decades of field experience, SRP delivers reliable results that protect your workforce and keep your operation compliant.

Common Types of Workplace Exposure Monitoring

1. Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)) Exposure Monitoring

  • Toxic form of chromium found in pigments, coatings, and welding fumes

  • Common exposure activities: welding, electroplating, and handling chromate compounds

  • Sampling performed per OSHA ID-215 and regulated under:

    • General Industry (29 CFR 1910.1026)

    • Shipyards (29 CFR 1915.1026)

    • Construction (29 CFR 1926.1126)

2. Welding Fume Surveys

  • Evaluates airborne metal fumes and process gases from welding operations

  • Identifies toxic exposures and recommends engineering or PPE-based controls

  • Supports compliance with OSHA air contaminant standards

3. Dust, Gas, and Vapor Exposure Monitoring

  • Testing based on NIOSH and OSHA methods for substances with defined:

    • Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs)

    • Recommended Exposure Limits (RELs)

    • Threshold Limit Values (TLVs)

  • Uses calibrated sampling pumps and direct-reading instruments for accurate results

4. Metalworking Fluids (MWFs) Exposure

  • Evaluates exposure to coolant and lubricant aerosols in machining operations

  • OSHA limits:

    • 5 mg/m³ (8-hr TWA) for mineral oil mist

    • 15 mg/m³ (8-hr TWA) for particulates not otherwise classified (PNOC)

  • Identifies safer formulations and engineering controls

5. Radon Gas Monitoring

  • Tests for airborne radon, the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.

  • Applicable to workplaces, schools, and residential settings

  • Provides mitigation recommendations for elevated concentrations

6. Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Exposure

  • Colorless, flammable, toxic gas with a “rotten egg” odor

  • Common in petroleum, natural gas, and wastewater operations

  • Evaluations include:

    • Air sampling and exposure assessment

    • Exposure Control Programs with engineering and PPE solutions

7. Hospital and Healthcare Chemical Exposures

  • Monitoring for chemicals such as:

    • Formaldehyde (formalin)

    • Waste anesthesia gases

    • Nitrous oxide

    • Xylene

  • Common areas: operating rooms, labor & delivery, and laboratories

  • Ensures compliance with OSHA and Joint Commission standards
